Isla Mujeres map & travel guide

This wonderful little island is one of our absolute favorite places to vacation. It’s a short ferry ride from Cancun, but the atmosphere couldn’t be any more different. From the moment you step off the ferry, you’ll leave behind the snarled traffic, neon Isla Mujeres aerial photographsigns, and all of your worries. Let one of the “Maletero’s” load your bags onto their bicycle cart and enjoy a leisurely stroll to your hotel. Then, it’s off to beautiful north beach lined with thatched-roof beach clubs with swings at the bar, and lounge chairs lining the shore where the gentle water laps at the sand. Oh how we wish we were there right now.

The downtown area measures only four blocks wide, by seven blocks long. There are two main streets. Avenue Hidalgo, a pedestrian-only street lined with open-air restaurants and lounges, and Avenue Medina that runs along the oceanfront,
lined with quaint (and excellent) seafood restaurants–we call this area “Seafood Row.”

No trip to Isla Mujeres is complete without a golf cart tour around the island. Attractions include Punta Sur (South Point), where, on one side, crashing surf pounds at the base of a towering bluff; on the other side is a shallow area with a rainbow of beautiful turquoise hues. You’ll also find snorkeling at Garrafón de Castillo, and an island delicacy–Tikinxik fish (cooked on a wood-fired grill in a coating of achiote paste), it will leave your mouth watering anytime someone mentions Isla Mujeres.

Among the more eclectic attractions is a man-made island that floats on a bed of recycled plastic bottles. It features a home, private beach, and palms.

You’ll definitely hear the name Mundaca when visiting the island. This pirates odd tale has become an island legend; his hacienda, and his tomb—complete with skull and crossbones–has become a tourist attraction.

About us: Perry and Laura (MapChick) have been selling maps/travel guides of the Yucatan area since 1997. We’ve traveled down almost every road (even a few we found that we weren’t supposed to be on…oops), eaten at nearly every restaurant, and visited every attraction. We love the research and exploration, and love to share our amazing finds with you.

Our guarantee: Order our maps/travel guides; if they aren’t absolutely the most amazing travel product you’ve ever seen, just mail it back and we’ll refund the entire amount (however, we do have one request...if you choose priority mail because you need them quickly, how about you share in the risk? $5 of postage would eat up the profit from other sales).
