Exchanging money
You'll find money exchanges at the airport, malls, hotels, and nearly every street corner. Typically, we think the best rates are the exchanges in the malls and along the streets. You can also exchange money at a bank, but if you have to wait in line, or go out of your way, the difference is not really worth the loss of precious vacation time. The exchange difference may be about $1 for every $100 exchanged.

Below is a chart that shows you how many pesos you should receive for various dollar amounts based on an exchange rate of 10.5 to 11.5 pesos to the dollar. We almost always exchange $100 per time, because it's so easy to multiply the exchange rate by 100, and calculate what you should get back. You can also print out the chart below and take it with you. Click in the upper left of the chart to open a new window, then print. |

It's time to spend some dinero.
Once you've turned your hard-earned dollars into pesos, it feels, and spends, like play money. Whenever paying for something, you have to stop and calculate how much that would be in dollars. If the exhange rate is at 10 pesos to the dollar, the math is easy. But, variations like 9.8 or 10.2 can be more difficult.
We've designed conversion charts to help you in your travels (see sample below). Just before you leave for vacation, check the currency rate to see which charts are close to the current rate; click on those charts to open them in their own window; then print that window. |
|
|
|
Print out several of the charts in that range to allow for fluctuations in the exchange rate (it changes almost every day).
We've rounded everything to the nearest 25 cents. Doing this makes the chart much easier, and quicker, to use. However, you may be off by a few cents on your purchases.
Warning
Do not accept torn pesos bills, even if they have been taped together. These bills are considered useless and you will have trouble using them to pay for anything. The money exchange will also not take them.
