Akumal and Jade Beach

  resort guide

Beaches

Akumal bay is one of the most perfect beaches in the
Yucatan. With wide sand, calm water, and beautiful palms, Akumal bay is the ideal place to relax.
Half-Moon bay has a beach, but not as perfect with fewer
palms and some rocky areas. The point between these
two bays has a rock shore, along the the points at the
entrance to Yal-Ku lagoon. There is beautiful sand all
the way south except for the point next to south Akumal,
which is rocky (all this rock is what makes Akumal a snorkeling and diving paradise).

Transportation

It can be a long walk from properties in Half-Moon bay to
the restaurant and business district at Half-Moon Bay.
Taxis are available in the business district, but they don't
just drive along the half-moon bay road looking for
passengers. Many guests in the area rent a bicycle and
enjoy a liesurey form of transportation.
Colectivo vans going south to Tulum, or north to
Playa del Carmen will stop along the highway.

Nightlife

Mostly just quiet entertainment with live musicians.
There are shows and dancing at Lol-Ha.
More information is available on our printed
Riviera Maya map & travel guide.

Shopping

Small grocery stores are located in the main business district and several convenience stores can be found near the condominiums on Half-Moon bay.

Hotels

There are also small hotels, a boutique hotel at Jade
Beach, and several all-inclusive resorts. However, most
accommodations are privately owned condominiums
for rent.
More hotel information at our hotel locations map.

Restaurants

There are less than a dozen restaurants, which is
about right for the number of tourists here at any
given time. You'll find excellent food in Akumal in a
variety of price ranges.

Tours & activities

Scuba diving and snorkeling are the the main attractions
in Akumal. This is a nesting area for sea turtles so it is
common to see them in the water. The Tulum ruins are
located about 15 miles (25km) to the south.

Riviera Maya map & travel guide.

Atmosphere

The mood is extremely laid-back and quiet. A lot of scuba
divers visit for the excellent reefs. No buildings are more
than 3 or 4 stories tall. There are mostly condominium
buidings on Half-Moon bay, with private homes (many for
rent) on both sides of this area.

Who visits

Mostly Americans and Canadians searching for a secuded,
quiet, vacation experience. We would guess that most guests area married couples over the age of 30.
