Riviera Maya is the name given to the entire coastline
from Cancun at the north, to Tulum at the south.
This includes areas that are described in their own
sections: Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Playacar,
Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, and Tulum.
  This information will cover the outlying areas where
you'l l find everything from thatched-roof cabanas to
elegant all-inclusive resorts.

Beaches

Listed from the edge of Cancun to the south:
  • Moon Palace resort area. Nice beach, but lots of
    seaweed in the shallows. There is so much seaweed,
    that they rake up huge piles early each morning.
  • Bahia Petempich. Nice beaches.
  • Puerto Morelos (see Puerto Morelos page).
  • Playa del Secreto. Nice beaches.
  • Maya Koba. Nice beaches.
  • Punta Bete. Nice beaches.

  • Paamul. Beautiful sandy cove.
  • Xpu-Ha. Beautiful beaches.

Transportation

Major resorts will have taxis available in front of the hotel.
If you stay in Punta Bete, Paamul, Xpu-Ha, or Tankah,
you may have to call for a taxi (it's probably best to have
a rental car).
  Colectivo vans drive up-and-down the highway and will
pick you up unless they are already full.

Nightlife

The all-inclusive resorts all have evening entertainment;
if you choose one of the other areas you'll probably enjoy
the rhythms of the ocean and watch the stars each night.

Shopping

All-inclusive resorts have stores. In more remote areas
you may have to visit the nearest town.

Hotels

You'll either find mega all-inclusive resorts, or small hotels
and cabanas. There is very little in between.

Restaurants

• Bahia Petempich is mostly all-inclusive and has
  no public restaurants.
• Playa del Secreto is mostly homes and has
  no publilc restaurants.
• Punta Maroma has one public restaurant
  near the highway.
• Maya Koba is an all-inclusive development.
• Punta Bete has ? public restaurants.
• Paamul has one public restaurant.
• Tankah has 2 public restaurants on the beach,
  plus one near the highway.

Tours & activities

The all-inclusive resorts all offer tours and activities.
Most people who stay in the remote areas have a
rental car and create their own tours.

Atmosphere

All-inclusive resorts are busy and entertaining, while other
locations in the Riviera Maya are remote and quiet.

Who visits

The all-inclusive resorts have a range of ages and
nationalities, although some resorts cater mainly
to people from certain areas of Europe.
