Riviera Maya map & travel guide

Aerial photo of Tulum Mayan ruinsThe Riviera Maya is over 150 kilometers (93 miles) of incredible Caribbean coastline. The aera is lined with amazing beaches, restaurants, beach clubs, snorkeling, and natural attractions.

Great snorkeling areas include Akumal bay, Yal-Ku lagoon, Xel-Ha park, Inah reef, and the reefs of Puerto Morelos. Major tourist attractions are Xcaret park, Xel-Ha park, Hidden World's, and the Tulum Mayan ruins; but these are only a few of the fantastic treasures along the way. There ar ecrystal-clear cenotes (pools of water fed by underground rivers), underground caves, the amazing Muyil lagoon and Muyil Mayan ruins, zip-line parks, and ATV tours.

There are dozens of cities dotting the coastline that each have a personality of their own. Playa del Carmen is the largest, the city is an eclectic mix of cultures, with a large European population. Puerto Morelos is a laid back village with restaurants surrounding a quiet town square; Tulum is a small city next to the Mayan ruins. The Tulum beachfront area is one of the most beautiful destinations for those seeking out wide, uncrowded beaches.

Akumal is known for its bay where sea turtles come to feed and nest. You'll also find interesting communities like Paamul, where residents live in recreational vehicles covered by thatched-roof palapas; Tankah and Soliman bays, with several dozen private homes, and five excellent restaurants.

Exploring the region is easy using public transportation that runs up-and-down the main coastal highway (highway 305). Vans known as colectivo's pass by every few minutes and stop to
pick-up, or drop-off, passengers along the way.

About us: Perry and Laura (MapChick) have been selling maps/travel guides of the Yucatan area since 1997. We’ve traveled down almost every road (even a few we found that we weren’t supposed to be on…oops), eaten at nearly every restaurant, and visited every attraction. We love the research and exploration, and love to share our amazing finds with you.

Our guarantee: Order our maps/travel guides; if they aren’t absolutely the most amazing travel product you’ve ever seen, just mail it back and we’ll refund the entire amount (however, we do have one request...if you choose priority mail because you need them quickly, how about you share in the risk? $5 of postage would eat up the profit from other sales).
